On his way to Canaan, where God called Abram to move, he came to Bethel where he and Lot settled for some time. They both had huge flocks, herds of animals, and so many possessions that they could no longer live together. Humble Abram told Lot – “Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” Lot chose the well-watered plains of Jordan and lived close to sin city Sodom, while Abram lived near Mamre in Hebron (Canaan.)
Lot selfishly wanted the best for himself, even though Abram, being the eldest, had the privilege of choosing first. Yet, for the sake of peace, Abram let Lot take the first choice. Life is a series of choices. Lot did not think that in choosing to live near Sodom, he was exposing him and his family to very many evil temptations which could destroy the family. We need to pray and ask Father God to guide our choices when we have them, so that we can choose wisely and live for Christ’s glory.
In those days each city had its own king. When war broke out among the cities, the conquered city had to pay taxes to the victorious king. When king Kedorlaomer defeated Sodom; he captured Lot and his family and all their possessions. When Abram heard about it, he took only 318 men and chased after Kedorloamer’s army and with God’s help, he defeated them and recovered Lot and his family and their possessions.
We can learn from Abram’s willingness. His men must have been trained beforehand, and they had the courage to face the enemy with God’s help. It is often easier to NOT become involved, but God used Abram to be brave and bring victory. Are we prepared to act immediately when others need help?
“After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” (Gen. 15:1) Abram reminded God that he was childless, but God said to him – “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!” These “descendants” continue even up to this day because Gal. 3:7 says – “Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham.” We all need to imitate Abram’s faith. Do you believe in God’s promises? Romans 4:3 says – “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
God desires to bless us. No one can count the stars. God was impressing upon Abram that His blessings are immeasurable and uncountable just like He promises us this day.
Abba Father God. Thank You that I can trust You and believe You when You promise, through Your Word and prayers, that You know what is best for me. Thank You that You are my shield and my blessed great reward.
