DEEP, GODLY DESIRES 23.Devotion

What is the deepest desire of your heart? If you could ask ONE thing from the Lord, what would it be?

In Psalm 27:4 we read that David wrote, “ONE thing I ask from the Lord, this ONLY do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.” For David, the presence of the Lord was his deepest desire which would satisfy him fully and completely.

We all need to pray for Godly desires – to do the will of God first and foremost, to store up riches in heaven, and not on earth, to fix and focus our eyes on Jesus and to prepare for eternal life forever. When a man builds a home for his family, he will make a tremendous effort to make a very solid foundation and build a suitable home where his family will find security, shelter, and provision. How much more we need to get ready for our heavenly Home which Jesus promised He is also preparing for us in advance. 1 Cor. 2:9 tells us, “…as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Oh friends, we need to become excited at the expectation of our forthcoming, permanent address in heaven, where we will be able to be with Jesus and “gaze upon the beauty of the Lord.” If our desires are intensely fixed on eternal values, then we will find a deep peace that will fill our innermost beings as we look forward with hope and joy to that prospect. We will also be able to say what Psalm 73:24-26 say, “You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Precious Lord Jesus, please help me to abide in You, my Vine, so that Your desires for me will become my desires. You tell us in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” Thank You my Good Shepherd, that I can rely upon You, through the presence of the Holy Spirit, to cultivate Godly desires which are holy, righteous, and pure. May I truly desire ONLY You above all else in my life, for Your glory and for my ultimate destination. Amen
