In Matt. 23:37 Jesus wept and explained; “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!”
We notice Jesus’ longing to secure those who belong to Him, “under His wings” which is a sign of loving protection and security. Psalm 91 tells us that when we dwell in the shelter of the Most High our Lord, that “He will cover you with his feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” [Rampart = fortification and protection]
How wonderful to know that NO matter what happens to us, we have Someone we can run to for safety! When David was being persecuted by Saul, he wrote in Psalm 17:8 – “Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings.” David knew where to hide when in danger. Like a small chicken which runs under the protective wings of mother hen when danger threatens it, just so David ran to his heavenly Father for protection. Likewise, we too, can run quickly to Jesus and find shelter from the storms until they pass. Psalm 18:30 confirms this – “As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.”
Loving Father, “How precious is Your loving devotion, O God, that the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings!” [Psalm 36:7] Thank You so much that You never leave us nor forsake us, but that Your faithfulness is our security, and that You spread Your blessed “wings” wide open to protect and help all those who come to You. Amen
