Genuine joy should define our lives and become an ocean of renewal and transformation in our lives. Like love, pure spiritual joy is a choice we need to make daily. It is an inner joy which clings to Jesus, even during difficult situations, knowing that HE is in perfect control, no matter the outcome. “Overcoming joy” is a joy that overcomes and conquers our fears.
James writes about this kind of joy in James 1:2 + 3-> “Consider it PURE joy whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” The New Living translation says, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.”
“… knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” 1:3. The product of our trials must be patience which helps us to overcome and experience victory and joy regarding our troubles.
Hebrews 12:2 gives some insight into “pure joy.” “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who FOR THE JOY SET BEFORE HIM endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Jesus did not look at His terrible and agonizing circumstances of the cross, but He looked beyond them, knowing that His selfless, sacrificial action was leading to our Redemption and Eternity.
Precious Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me how to overcome and receive a measure of joy even when I undergo trials and hardships. Please help me to be an overcomer and not to give in to depression or doubts when I face difficulties. Please help me choose “pure joy” because You are pure, and Your example can help me to persevere amid trials with faith, trust, and sincere joy. I love You! Amen
